Letter to the Editor... Letter to the Editor...

Dear Editor,

This e-mail started with an announcement of a no smoking club at Bilkent University, falling into my inbox. In my very first year, 2001, I was amazed to see the strict rules for protecting non-smokers in all indoor areas. Growing up in a home with parents smoking, I have appreciated this policy very much.

However, there are some outdoor areas that require people to be in close proximity with each other, like at the bus stops on campus. At peak hours especially, there are a lot of students waiting for busses. I often encounter someone smoking. I generally warn them. Nonetheless, some argue with me and I have no signs or regulation to refer to. All I can do is to encourage smokers to have respect for non-smokers. Although it is outdoors, the smoke is still as irritating as if it were in the BCC labs.

I think that it would be best if we could have regulations preventing smoking in bus stop enclosures on campus.

Best,

Emre Herdem (IE/V)
