Distinguished Oxford Professor Comes to Bilkent
Professor Elleke Boehmer will visit Bilkent this week as a guest of the Department of English Language and Literature. She will give two keynote presentations at the international conference "Anglophone Literatures in International Contexts."
For several years, Elleke Boehmer was the Hildred Carlile Professor in Literatures in English at Royal Holloway, University of London. As of this year, she is professor in World Writing in English at Wolfson College, University of Oxford. This distinguished appointment marks a return for Professor Boehmer, who was an Oxford graduate student for both her master's and doctoral degrees. Although she has been living, studying, and working in Britain for many years now, she was born in South Africa and received her first university degree from
Rhodes University - a "triple first" degree that opened up the horizons of her educational career.
Professor Boehmer's accomplishments are too numerous and wide-ranging to list in detail. She is best known as the author of a cornerstone book in the field of postcolonial studies, “Colonial and Postcolonial Literature: Migrant Metaphors,” first published by Oxford University Press in 1995, and then again, as a fully revised and updated second edition, in 2005. She has, however, published several other important scholarly books - and four favorably received novels.
At the Anglophone Literatures conference, Professor Boehmer will speak on Thursday afternoon about Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. On Friday afternoon, she will deliver a major new paper examining the impact of Indian visitors upon Britain's social and cultural life in the early twentieth century.
