Bilkent News Picture Challenge
I Know Where You've Been This Week

BY TULYA KAVAKLIOĞLU (MBG/IV)

Hello everyone!  I guess the challenge is starting to be a little more difficult for you. That's great. Now you have a chance to be curious about something, search for it, find the answer, and be rewarded in turn. You all know already that you do not need to go far away because the puzzle picture is taken from somewhere on campus, so the only remaining question is where?

Last week's picture was from the second floor corridor of the Economics and Administrative Sciences building. It is a part of a print made by a student in Introduction to Print Making, which was then given by Ilgım Veryeri Alaca, currently an instructor at Koç University. If you go and see the prints located on that wall, you will realize that there are no names on the prints but certain numbers such as 1-14 or 3-15, to be read “one of fourteen,” for example. The latter number shows the number in a limited print run, and the first number indicates the individual print's place in that order. The prints are made by screen print technique and then printed in a limited run. The screen print technique basically uses a template to produce a number of copies of a texture. Print artists use limited print runs to guarantee art collectors that the artist will not make more prints than specified. This increases the value of each individual print.

Professor Alaca says one of the copies of each print also is present in Richmond University, Virginia, representing our University's work, and she adds that these paintings are actually the products of an associate project with Richmond University, which also enabled the students to exchange their artwork.

Let us return to our picture in BN. It was showing the injured eye of the woman in the painting. One can easily think at first sight that it was torn intentionally, especially when we consider the little blood droplets underneath the eye. Actually this is why this painting is a popular topic of some discussions of the people passing by.

So, if you are interested in joining our game, go ahead and try to find out where I took this week's picture. Don't forget; you will have a chance to win a coffee or a lunch if you can make a right guess.

Prizes will be:
The first two correct answers win coffee from Coffee Break.
The 15th correct answer wins lunch for one from Le Piment Rouge.
