A New Carpooling Service for University Commuters: birliktegit.com
A new carpooling website, birliktegit.com, began serving members of university communities in Turkey on February 1. Created by Cem Karasayar (IE/II) and Metehan Yurt (EE/II), birliktegit.com aims to reduce traffic, decrease the pollution caused by cars, make commuting less expensive and bypass the inconveniences of public transportation. The site's membership is increasing rapidly.
The founders say they created the site after realizing that they were both making the same commute to Bilkent every day in separate vehicles. But while driving alone in your own car is boring -- not to mention getting more expensive every day -- public transportation can be a disaster: slow, crowded and uncomfortable. Cem and Metehan knew that many university students living off campus must be dealing with the same issues. Carpooling would be the logical solution. But how do you find someone to share a ride with? As of this month, the answer to this question is: birliktegit.com. The site serves only individuals affiliated with universities in Turkey, and users must sign up using their "edu.tr"
e-mail accounts. In this way, a person can create only one account, preventing the possibility of fake accounts and ensuring the site's security and carpoolers' safety.
On birliktegit.com, users can find people they know and add them as friends. When they post a travel route, they can filter it so that "only my friends can see it," "only people at my university can see it" or, if they like, "everyone on the site can see it."
Many people travel exactly the same route every day without knowing it. By using birliktegit.com, people who are going to and from the same places can get in touch with each other and arrange to travel in the same car. One great advantage of carpooling is that drivers and passengers share the cost of gas. In addition, the number of cars on the road is decreased, preventing traffic jams as well as contributing to a cleaner environment by lessening air pollution.
