Growing Up as Negotiators and Peer Mediators: Workshop for BELS Students

On Thursday, December 20, 2012, a workshop on "Conflict Resolution, Negotiation and Peer Mediation" was presented by Prof. Abbas Türnüklü to Bilkent Erzurum Laboratory School (BELS) students and academic staff. During the workshop, interpersonal conflicts, negotiation skills, the goals of mediation and its positive effects on problem solving were discussed and demonstrated in practice through case studies.

Bilkent Erzurum Laboratory School initiated the “Conflict Resolution, Negotiation and Peer Mediation” project in the 2010-2011 academic year under the guidance of Prof. Türnüklü. The school, students, teachers and parents are all part of the project, whose purpose is to develop communication skills and enable individuals to find constructive and peaceful solutions to problems that may occur among their peers. Thanks to this project, students not only learn to negotiate and mediate, but are also prepared for adulthood in that they are assisted in developing skills and attributes such as leadership, the ability to communicate, critical thinking, intrinsic motivation, self-assessment, self-discipline and self-confidence.
