Youth Symphony Orchestra First to Represent Turkey at International Festival
The Bilkent Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO), composed of musicians aged 16-25 who are currently enrolled in the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, attended the XIX. International Youth Orchestra Festival in Spain from April 14-24. The annual festival hosted 600 young musicians from a number of countries, including Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, France, and Poland. The BYSO, the first-ever Turkish participant in the festival, was invited, as with all entrants, on the basis of a videotaped performance sent to the organizing committee.

In the course of the festival the BYSO performed six concerts, and 500 CDs of the orchestra were distributed to appreciative audiences. Two of Spain's national newspapers, La Opinion and La Verdad, devoted extensive space to articles on the orchestra. Eleven BYSO members were named to the International Youth Orchestra together with musicians from 10 different youth orchestras. Following festival tradition, the International Youth Orchestra then gave a concert on the last day of the festival, with Laszlo Heltay, the renowned Director of Saint Martin in the Fields, conducting.

The BYSO has been conducted by Mahir Çakar since it was established in 1994. It is made up of 80 young people who began their studies of music at an early age at Bilkent. The musicians are continuing their studies at FMPA.
