Last year, a “Zero Waste” regulation was published in Turkey’s Official Gazette, with the aim of reducing the volume of nonrecyclable waste produced in the country. Under the regulation, universities were given until December 31, 2020, to qualify for Zero Waste certification at the basic level. On April 20, Bilkent became the first university in Turkey to attain this certification, which it received from the Ankara Provincial Directorate for the Environment and Urbanization.
The Zero Waste model calls not only for reuse and recycling, but also, crucially, for reducing and preventing the production of waste in the first place.
