isik (300 x 201)On Wednesday, March 30, Bilkent Erzurum Laboratory School held a videoconference with Bilkent University Department of Physics alumnus Mete Atatüre, who is currently a professor at Cambridge University in the UK.

During the conference, Dr. Atatüre summarized his latest research, in which he measured photons’ fluctuations below the quantum level. He also responded to the questions of IB Physics students concerning the field of quantum optics, in which he is an expert. Discussion topics included the superposition of fluctuation, the uncertainties originating from the distinctive quantum features of photons and “quantum dot” technology.

In addition, Dr. Atatüre discussed the social aspects of being a scientist. He attracted the interest of the entire BELS family when he gave an inspirational and motivational commentary on the role of women in science. He encouraged female students to take part in the basic sciences, saying, “In laboratories women can work as efficiently as men.” When asked about his experiences as a Bilkent University student, Dr.  Atatüre stressed the opportunities that Bilkent University had offered him. (He went on to earn a PhD at Boston University.)

Near the end of the conference, Dr. Atatüre shared his predictions on the future course of quantum mechanics and the path of scientific development, as well as advice to future university students. He urged students to pursue study in fields in which they are passionate and not to be influenced by popular ideas of what fields are important.
