On April 2 and 3, this year’s Balkan Kendo Cup championship was held in Thessaloniki, Greece. Practitioners of kendo, a Japanese martial art, came from Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and (by special invitation) Jordan to compete in the various individual and team categories of the event.
Among them was Bilkent University kendo instructor Zafer Demirtaş, who competed in the veterans’ group B (ages 47–57) individual category. At the end of the event, Mr. Demirtaş ranked ahead of all but one of the other competitors in his category, finishing second.
