qs_2016-300-x-149The Quacquarelli Symonds World University rankings report for 2016-17, released on September 6, lists Bilkent as Turkey’s highest-ranked university.

Bilkent is placed in the group of universities ranked 411-420. Four other Turkish universities join Bilkent in the top 500: Sabancı University (in the group ranked 441-450), Koç University (in the group ranked 451-460), and Middle East Technical University and Boğaziçi University (both in the group ranked 471-480).

For this edition of the QS World University Rankings, over 100,000 survey responses were collected, with over 4,322 universities being considered and 916 evaluated.

In conjunction with the comprehensive World University Rankings, QS compiles a list of the world’s top “young” universities from among the schools appearing in those rankings. The 50 Under 50 list comprises universities that were founded less than 50 years ago; in 2015 it was expanded from 50 to 100 universities with the addition of the “next 50 under 50.” In the young university rankings for 2016-2017, Bilkent is placed in the 51-60 group; Koç and Sabancı are both in the 61-70 group.

Also recently released were the 2016 QS University Rankings for Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA), which highlight the top 200 universities in the Eastern Europe–Central Asia region.

Three Russian universities top these rankings: Lomonosov Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State University and Saint Petersburg State University. The highest-ranked Turkish university is Boğaziçi (9th). Bilkent is ranked 12th, Sabancı 13th, METU 14th, Koç 16th and İstanbul Technical University 23rd.

While the World and EECA rankings employ similar indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty–student ratio and citations per faculty, these indicators are weighted differently in the two reports, accounting for the difference in the relative rankings of the Turkish universities.
