Bilkent had a real basketball weekend as it hosted the 11th Ayva Cup tournament April 10-12. Four universities, Başkent, Bilkent, Hacettepe and METU, participated in the tournament, sending both women’s and men’s teams to compete on the court.
The Bilkent women’s team got their payoff for a year of hard work, easily winning the Ayva Cup on their side of the tournament with scores of 45-25 over Başkent, 63-39 over Hacettepe and 54-38 over METU.
For their part, the Bilkent men came in an agonizingly close second. They won their first two games, beating Başkent by a score of 75-58, and then gaining another resounding victory against Hacettepe, 65-47.
As the clock ticked down near the end of a very close game against their third opponent, METU, it appeared that the Bilkent men, too, might win the Cup. But they ended up losing to METU 51-50, by virtue of a three-pointer that came in the last three seconds.
Kudos are in order for all of the teams, who contributed their best efforts, and for the Sports Center staff, who organized the event.
Our teams will be away next week playing in the university first division group games, which will be held at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. Last year, both of our teams came in third in their groups, so with a little improvement and a little luck, they just might come back as champions this year!
