Two students in the Master’s in Conference Interpreting Program (CINT) participated in the 18th annual Geneva International Model United Nations (GIMUN) event, held in the Palais des Nations (the UN’s office in Geneva) March 25-31.
GIMUN is notable for being one of the few bilingual MUN events in the world. Delegates and speakers can speak either French or English, and all speeches are interpreted simultaneously or consecutively into the other official language.
This year, for the first time, a Turkish interpretation booth was set up, courtesy of the two Bilkent students, Oğuzhan Demirok and Safiye Bal. They offered interpretation services for Turkish-speaking delegates in committee sessions as well as during the event’s opening and closing ceremonies.
The students were enabled to attend GIMUN with the support of Prof. Hitay Özbay, acting dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters, and Prof. Tanju İnal, chair of the Department of Translation and Interpretation, along with organizational assistance from instructor Valery Patternotte.
