On Wednesday, March 16, the Bilkent Teaching and Learning Support Center (BTLSC) will be hosting an online conversation on the topic “How to Handle Student Excuses.” The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. and run for 50 minutes.
“We frequently receive excuses from students for not attending class meetings, missing exams or submitting assignments late,” note the organizers. “Several issues arise when we receive an excuse, such as whether the excuse is valid and whether/how we should accommodate the student. We might also ask how we can design our courses in the first place in order to create a learning environment in which students with legitimate excuses are treated fairly and in which it is easier for us to handle excuses when they do come up.”
In this conversation hour, participants will be invited to share their experiences and collectively brainstorm strategies and methods for addressing these and similar questions.
