This week, on March 5, the Library will hold the first Lunchtime Lecture for the spring semester. Our speaker will be Prof. Fazlı Can (CS), and his talk will be entitled “Things Hidden Behind the Numbers of İnce Memeds.”

In the lecture, Prof. Can will consider text mining in literary works: one possible use of this is to find hidden patterns that are consciously or unconsciously created by the author of a given work. For example, in an author’s writings, we may want to identify a change in style over time and see how this change connects with society at large.

Prof. Can will begin by briefly introducing the fundamental concepts of text mining. He will then describe the findings from a text mining study of Yaşar Kemal’s “İnce Memed” tetralogy and discuss how the hidden patterns in “İnce Memed” can be understood within the context of twentieth-century Turkish literature and the Turkish language.

Although the talk is based on the quantitative research undertaken by Prof. Can in collaboration with his colleagues and students, it will take the form of a popular science presentation and incorporate some personal anecdotes and allusions to other famous works in Turkish literature. Therefore, whether your interest is in computer science or in literature, there will certainly be something in this talk for you!

The lecture will start at 12:40 p.m. on Thursday, in the Library Art Gallery, and will be in English. Lunchtime refreshments will be provided.
