This month, the Faculty of Law is holding a talk series on climate and sustainability. Titled “Where Are We on the Climate Issue?” the event will consist of three interactive sessions taking place on February 9, 16 and 23 in Mithat Çoruh Auditorium. The speaker will be Önder Algedik, a climate and energy expert who also writes a weekly policy analysis column for Duvar newspaper. The first session, “Climate 2021: Where Is the World on the Climate Issue?” will focus on the current status of the climate crisis worldwide, which has been described by the UN as a “red alert for humanity.” International regulations, the role of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the results of COP 26 (the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, held in Glasgow) will be discussed.
The current status of our nation’s regulations and policies with regard to the climate crisis will be explored in the second session, “Climate 2022: Where Is Turkey on the Climate Issue?”
“Climate 2023: Where Will We Be on the Climate Issue?” is the topic of the last session. Mr. Algedik will identify differences we can make in our personal lives and in our immediate environments, and will also consider various possible climate scenarios for the future.
The organizers from the Faculty of Law stressed the importance of the issue to be examined by the series, saying, “At a time when humanity is at a turning point, we invite those among our students who want to take a closer look at the climate issue and its various dimensions – social, scientific and political – to attend our event.”
