On December 21, 35 teams of students from the GE440, GE441, GE443 and GE446 courses presented their transdisciplinary senior projects to four panels of experts. The panels evaluated the teams’ work and chose a winning project in each course.
Students in all four courses worked on their team projects intensively throughout the semester. The topic of GE440 was “Globalization,” focusing on the intermeshing of various aspects of peoples’ lives regardless of their geographic location. The project “Technoparks: Technology Hubs or Technology Dumps?” was awarded first prize by the panel of judges for this course.
The GE441 course, “European Union,” was designed to introduce students to the political and economic aspects of the EU. The project “Immigration Crisis and the Extreme Right Vote in Europe” won first prize.
Students in GE443, “Social Challenges in Turkey,” analyzed multiple social challenges by integrating perspectives from different disciplines. First prize went to the project “Women and Environmental Activism.”
The GE446 course, “Development: Critical Perspectives and New Directions,” approached the issue of development by looking at both its prospects and its challenges. The course also discussed newer concepts informing the understanding of development, from “sustainability” to “de-growth.” The final panel of the day awarded first prize to the project “What Are the Determinants That the Turkish Government Considered When Going For a Nuclear Energy Policy?”
At a reception held in the FEASS atrium following the panels, students, panelists and the GE course lecturers celebrated the completion of a challenging but successful semester of interdisciplinary teamwork.
