The fourth edition of the “Historical Dictionary of Turkey,” written by Prof. Metin Heper of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Asst. Prof. Duygu Öztürk-Tunçel of İstanbul Medipol University and Nur Bilge Criss, retired faculty member from the Bilkent Department of International Relations, was recently released.

The book covers the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey over a time span of more than six centuries. It presents the basic characteristics of the two periods and traces the development from an empire to a state–nation, from tradition to modernity, from a sultanate to a republic, and from a modest country to one that has become a regional power and is aspiring to yet greater influence on the world stage.

This is done through a chronology, an introduction, appendixes and an extensive bibliography, in addition to the main dictionary section with over 900 cross-referenced entries on important individuals, politics, the economy, foreign relations, religion and culture.
