“Gizli Oturum” Premieres at Bilkent Theater

07 December 2015 Comments Off on “Gizli Oturum” Premieres at Bilkent Theater

Last week, on December 3 and 4, fourth-year students from the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts presented the Bilkent premiere performances of “Gizli Oturum” (Huis Clos/No Exit) by Jean-Paul Sartre. The production was directed by Asst. Prof. Jason Hale, chair of the Department of Performing Arts.

“Huis Clos” is a 1944 existentialist French play by Jean-Paul Sartre. The play is a depiction of the afterlife, in which three deceased characters are punished by being locked into a room together for eternity. It is the source of Sartre’s famous and often misinterpreted quotation, “L’enfer, c’est les autres” (“Hell is other people”), a reference to Sartre’s ideas about the perpetual ontological struggle of being caused to see oneself as an object in the world of another consciousness.

The assistant director of the play is Vis. Asst. Prof. Daniel Irizarry; lighting is by Yılmaz Ertekin, and music by Murat Ömür Tuncer. Cast members are Ecesu Sevindik, Hakan Coşar, İpek Erim and Kıvanç Değirmenci; Melisa Su Taşkıran is the directorial assistant.

Additional performances of “Gizli Oturum” will take place on December 10, 17 and 24 at 8 p.m. in the Bilkent Theater Hall. Tickets can be obtained from biletiva.com.
