Last week, the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design welcomed back Sıla Karakaya, an IAED (’11) graduate who had specialized in filmmaking. She spoke to students about her experience in various branches of the film industry and the ways her educational background had prepared her for her profession.

After graduating from Bilkent, Sıla continued her studies at New York University’s TISCH School of the Arts, earning an MFA degree in production design and scenic design. She also holds an MFA in lighting design from the Parsons School of Design. Currently based in İstanbul, she describes her work as “building worlds for film and theater characters.”

Sýla most recently served as art director for Alper Çağlar’s “Panzehir” and Can Evrenol’s “Baskın.” She was also the art director for Spike Lee’s movie “Redhook Summer,” her second collaboration with Lee after the HBO channel series “da Brick.” She was the assistant art director for Yılmaz Erdoğan’s “Kelebeğin Rüyası” and Alphan Eşeli’s “Sarıkamış: Eve Dönüş 1915.”
