Department of Computer Engineering PhD graduate Mohammed Alser has received the IEEE Turkey Doctoral Dissertation Award for his thesis “Accelerating the Understanding of Life’s Code Through Better Algorithms and Hardware Design.”

In his thesis, Dr. Alser introduced novel algorithms and efficient hardware architectures for accelerating the DNA read-mapping process in genome analysis by an order of magnitude. He completed his PhD in June 2018 under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Can Alkan and Prof. Onur Mutlu, and is currently working as a lecturer and senior researcher at ETH Zürich in Switzerland.

The award was presented at a ceremony held at İstanbul Technical University on February 11 by IEEE’s Turkey section. Other awards presented at the event included the IEEE Turkey Lifetime Achievement Award, the IEEE Turkey Distinguished Service Award and the IEEE Turkey Research Award.

The dissertation award recognizes the work of promising young scientists who have completed a doctorate at a university in Turkey within the last two years. The IEEE Turkey Award Committee consists of 13 faculty members from seven universities.
