February 25, 2018, marks the eighth year since the loss of our beloved founder, Prof. İhsan Doğramacı. On that day and during the preceding week, a number of events will be held on campus to commemorate the anniversary of Prof. Doğramacı’s passing.
On Wednesday, February 21, the Bilkent Chamber Music Days series will offer a “Tribute to Hocabey,” with Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 (“Turkish”) and Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” Suite played by the Bilkent Symphony Youth Orchestra under the baton of conductors Işın Metin and Barış Demirezer, with violin soloist Nilüfer Sude Güçlü.
On Thursday, February 22, a panel on the topic of “İhsan Doğramacı’s Approach to Communication: Multiple Languages, Including Music” is scheduled to take place in Robert Debré Hall in the Main Library at 12:30 p.m. The panel will be in English; panelists are Prof. Adnan Akay, Dr. Phyllis Erdoğan and Dr. Işın Metin. Seating is limited; those who wish to attend should RSVP to lcv@bilkent.edu.tr.
On Sunday, February 25, the Mevlit will be recited at the Doğramacızade Ali Paşa Mosque following the noon prayers. For those who wish to attend, buses will depart from the Rektörlük Building (B-block) at 1 p.m. and from the Tunus bus stop at 12:30 p.m.
On the evening of that day, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra will give a concert dedicated to the memory of Prof. Doğramacı. The orchestra, conducted by Gürer Aykal, will perform pieces by Mozart, Bach and Shostakovich, with soloists Philippe Grauvogel (oboe) and Irina Nikotina (violin).
