A team of Bilkent University Faculty of Law students made it to the quarterfinals in the Future Arbitration Counsel Competition, held by the İstanbul Arbitration Center July 9–11. In addition, team member Özgür Kurt was singled out to receive the “Future Arbitration Counsel” award.
The competition, which was being held for the fifth time this year, took place online.
The other members of the Bilkent team were Orkun A. Apan, Ö. Y. Ogeday Demirer, Kutalmış H. Ersoy, A. Segenay Kerimoğlu and Meltem Sarıtaş. Prof. Bilgin Tiryakioğlu and Dr. Ekin Korkmaz coached the students for the event.
The competition dealt with the settlement of a mock dispute concerning the trade of game consoles between two companies incorporated in two countries, one of which enforces an embargo banning commercial sales to the other. The ISTAC Mediation and Arbitration Rules, the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, and Turkish law were applicable to the dispute.
The competition began with the exchange of statement of claims and defense early in November 2020. More than 50 university teams from all around Turkey went on to participate in the online portion of the event held in July of this year.
