Department of Performing Arts Streams Plays Online
Last month, the Department of Performing Arts began streaming prerecorded performances of some of its plays on the department’s YouTube channel, reaching a wide audience in Turkey and abroad. The plays, staged by senior students as their graduation projects, were recorded over the course of the past several years. The first streaming, which took place on April 16, featured the production from the 2019–2020 academic year, “Küçük Tekneler İçin Fırtına Uyarısı” (Small Craft Warnings).
The streamings, which will continue this week and next, are aimed at bringing the Bilkent theater community together during this period of distance learning and sheltering at home. “Whether artists and audiences come together in the theater or remotely, we still experience art as a community,” declared Performing Arts department chair Jason Hale.
“Küçük Tekneler İçin Fırtına Uyarısı” will have two more online showings this month, on May 15 and 22 (Fridays) at 8 p.m.
Senior project plays from previous years are being streamed on Thursdays. “Kuvâyi Milliye Destanı” and “La Ronde,” from the 2018–2019 academic year, were shown on April 23 and April 30, while “Öfke” (Look Back in Anger), from 2017–2018, was streamed on May 7. Still to come are two plays from 2016–2017: “22. Madde” (Catch-22), on Thursday, May 14, and “Lefty’i Beklerken” (Waiting for Lefty) on Thursday, May 21, both at 8 p.m.
The remaining performances can be seen on the Bilkent Tiyatro Bölümü YouTube channel, starting at the times indicated above. For more information, please see instagram@bilkenttiyatro.
