TRIN Students to Stage Beckett Plays in Two Languages

This week, the Department of Translation and Interpretation (TRIN) will be presenting “Beckett Translating Beckett,” a performance consisting of three short plays in English and French written and translated by Samuel Beckett. The plays are “Catastrophe,” “Ohio Impromptu” and “Rockaby.”

Directed by TRIN instructors Barbara Gülen and Laurence Herculin, all three plays will be performed in in both languages.

The project came about in part because  four of the five cast members – Melisa Algür, Ege Kacar, Boran Özgül and Pelin Türkmen – are TRIN students who study translation in French, English and Turkish, while the remaining member, Deniz Arman, is a BF student who loves drama. Moreover, as Beckett translated his own plays from English to French and vice versa, staging the sketches in both languages serves to  reflect his translation strategies.

The performances will take place on Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16 in the FMPA Chamber Theater at 8 p.m. The poster for the event was designed by Beata Zalewska (instructor, FA).

Thanks goes to Jason Hale (Chair, THEA), Işıl Kasapoğlu (Theatre director) and Daniel Irizarry (Visiting Assistant Professor,THEA) for their assistance.
