At a ceremony held in İstanbul on December 3, Bilkent graduate Derya Durlu Gürzumar (Law ’10; LLM in Law and Economics ’15) received first prize in the “Politics, Law and Public Administration” category of the 2019 Junior Chamber International (JCI) Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Turkey competition. The award was presented to her by İstanbul Bar Association President Mehmet Durakoğlu.

One of the youngest among this year’s awardees, Ms. Durlu Gürzumar was nominated by independent jury members. She was chosen the Outstanding Young Person in her field in recognition of the contribution she makes through her discussions on AI and the law, conducted under the auspices of the International Bar Association, as well as her positive impact on law students, whom she mentors and coaches for moot court competitions.

An international nonprofit organization, JCI has more than 200,000 members worldwide. Each year, at both the national and international levels, the organization nominates citizens age 18 to 40 “who are engaged and committed to creating an impact in their communities” for the TOYP award, which is given to 10 individuals, one in each of 10 categories ranging from scientific leadership to forwarding human rights and world peace.
