Bilkent University has just been ranked 28th in the 2015 Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 list of the world’s best “young” universities. Bilkent has been moving up steadily, from 39th in 2013 to 31st in 2014, and now 28th this year. It is the second highest-ranked university in Turkey on the list after Sabancı University, which was ranked 13th; Koç University ranked 51st.

The THE 100 Under 50 rankings list the 100 best universities in the world among those which have been in existence for less than 50 years.

Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education rankings, said: “This unique ranking is based on the same tough standards and same comprehensive range of 13 performance indicators used in the esteemed THE World University Rankings. So many universities in this ranking have shown they can match the ancient global elite and have proven that with the right drive, what others have developed over centuries can be achieved in a matter of decades.

“They are a truly exciting and dynamic group of institutions which should serve as a lesson to the rest of the world—that the traditional global world order is not unassailable and visionary young universities can break through.”

THE’s five performance categories are:

1. Research: volume, income and reputation (30%)

2. Citations: research influence (30%)

3. Teaching: the learning environment (30%)

4. International outlook: people and research (7.5%)

5. Industry income: innovation (2.5%)
