Bilkent Cinematics kicks off its fall movie series with Paul Thomas (P.T.) Anderson’s Academy Award-nominated 1997 wild ride, “Boogie Nights,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Julianne Moore.
Anderson, who wrote, produced and directed the movie, would later go on to direct the highly acclaimed “There Will Be Blood” and “The Master.” In “Boogie Nights” he introduces us to the young dishwasher Eddie Adams, played by Wahlberg, who soon transforms himself into ‘Dirk Diggler,’ one of the bright lights of the 1970s American porn industry. The film brilliantly charts his journey throughout this often dangerous world.
Janet Maslin of the New York Times noted that Anderson’s “display of talent is as big and exuberant as skywriting,” and Rolling Stone called the film “a tumultuous…evocation of sex in the ’70s.”
“Boogie Nights” screens on Wednesday, November 9, at 6 p.m. in FFB-05. Everyone is welcome to Cinematics events, and all films are shown with English subtitles. Snacks and beverages are also offered.
