On Wednesday, November 23 at 6 p.m. in FF-B05, Bilkent Cinematics will screen Turkish-French filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s 2015 film “Mustang.”
The story of five orphaned sisters coming of age in a remote Turkish village, the movie explores both the pleasures and dangers of growing up in a conservative Turkish community. We watch as the sisters’ lives are dramatically altered by cultural demands such as modest dress and arranged marriage. It is a deeply touching portrayal of a life that many cannot imagine.
Ergüven’s film has been highly acclaimed. Among other accolades, it was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Academy Awards.
Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times called the film “a moving portrait of sisterhood, a celebration of a fierce femininity and a damning indictment of patriarchal systems that seek to destroy and control this spirit.”
Everyone is welcome at Bilkent Cinematics screenings, and snacks and refreshments are served. All movies are shown with English subtitles. For further information, contact Hossein Dabir at dabir@bilkent.edu.tr.
