On Wednesday, December 7 at 6 p.m. in FF-B05, Bilkent Cinematics will screen Masahiro Shinoda’s classic 1964 film noir “Pale Flower.”

pale-flowerIt’s the story of Muraki, a member of the infamous Japanese crime syndicate the Yakuza, who has just been released from jail and takes up with Saeko, a young woman who encourages a new type of criminality in him. The film charts their thrilling but destructive course together.

A leading member of the so-called Japanese New Wave who once worked under Yasujiro Ozu, Shinoda is one of Japan’s most influential directors. Critic Roger Ebert declared “Pale Flower” to be “one of the most haunting noirs I’ve ever seen…an exercise in existential cool.”

Everyone is welcome at Bilkent Cinematics events. Snacks and beverages are served, and all films are shown with English subtitles. For more details, contact Hossein Dabir at dabir@bilkent.edu.tr.
