This Week’s Film at Bilkent Cinematics: “Two Days, One Night”

On Thursday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m. in FFB-22, Bilkent Cinematics presents another in its stellar series of cinematic gems.

“Two Days, One Night” (2014) is a film by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. The acclaimed Belgian brothers, creators of some of the most compelling realist cinema in recent history (“Kid on a Bike,” “Rosetta,” “L’Enfant”) here return with a movie that forces viewers to participate in a moral dilemma.

Oscar winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), who received a Best Actress nomination for her role, plays Sandra, a young mother in a small Belgian town who has a nervous collapse and has to take time off work. In her absence, the managers at her workplace determine that if they fire Sandra, it will allow her colleagues to earn a substantial financial bonus that year. When Sandra finds this out, she attempts—over a period of two days and one night—to convince her co-workers not to accept the bonus and let her keep her much-needed job.

Here is a movie that compels us to ask, what would I do in this situation?  What is more important: money or loyalty? The answer is one that may be easily given before seeing the film, but not after.

“Even by their own high standards,” says the A.V. Club, “the Dardennes’ latest is a stunner.”

Everyone is welcome. As is customary at Bilkent Cinematics screenings, snacks and drinks will be served, and prizes will be offered. For additional information, please contact Hossein Dabir at dabir@bilkent.edu.tr.
