In November 6, Bilkent International House hosted a tutorial on basic Turkish so as to prepare international students for their upcoming midterm examinations in the Turkish 111 course and to better acquaint non-Turkish speakers with the language. The club has been organizing these tutorials for the past year now, since a large proportion of the incoming international students are not well versed in Turkish.

These preparatory classes are held before every midterm exam and are taught by volunteers, who are fluent in Turkish, from within the student club. The most recent tutorial was conducted by Sabuhvi Osmanov and attended by 20 students from nine countries. The tutorial encompassed the course syllabus and allowed students to ask questions concerning the grammar and structure of the Turkish language. It also provided students with practice questions and assisted them in answering basic questions relevant to the exam. In addition, the tutor answered various questions and helped clarify concepts related to the course.

The tutorial was not, however, restricted to course topics alone; it also gave students an opportunity to learn basic Turkish that is applicable in everyday life. Students thus improved their vocabulary by learning new Turkish words that will help them both in and outside the classroom. The session was enjoyable yet informative and proved to be a great learning experience.

Students who wish to attend the next tutorial should check the Bilkent International House’s Facebook page for the latest updates before the final examination: https://www.facebook.com/BilkentInternationalHouse/.
