Bilkent University UNAM faculty member Necmi Bıyıklı, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) faculty member Bilge Yıldız, and UNAM postdoctoral researcher Mehmet Yılmaz have been awarded an MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives Global Seed Fund (MISTI-GSF) grant. Bilkent and MIT research teams will be using this seed funding for their project “Dynamic Probing of Strain-Dependent Electronic and Ionic Transport Properties in Oxides for Energy and Information Technologies.”

The MISTI-GSF program enables participating teams from MIT to collaborate with international peers, either at MIT or abroad, with the aim of developing and launching joint research projects. Since 2008, the program has awarded over $9.6 million to over 463 projects. Proposals are jointly submitted by MIT and international research groups. Funds are intended to be used during the initial phase of developing an international collaboration for cutting-edge research.

In their collaborative project, Dr. Bıyıklı and Dr. Yılmaz bring expertise in inducing and characterizing strain in nanoscale functional materials dynamically over a large range of strain, while Dr. Yıldız brings the knowledge base and expertise regarding the transition metal oxide materials and their transport properties for energy conversion and information storage technologies.
