New Books from the Turkish Literature Department and Center

2005 is proving a banner year for book publications by scholars in Bilkent's Turkish Literature Department and Center.

The Center for Turkish Literature, in conjunction with Alkım Yayınevi, has just published two new books: "O Ben ki: Edip Cansever," edited by Yalçın Armağan (Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Turkish Literature), and "Bir İnsanı Sevmek: Sait Faik," edited by Dr. Süha Oğuzertem of the Department of Turkish Literature.

Acting Chair of the Department of History and faculty member in the Department of Turkish Literature Dr. Mehmet Kalpaklı has, in collaboration with Prof. Walter G. Andrews of the University of Washington, published a new book entitled "The Age of Beloveds: Love and the Beloved in Early-Modern Ottoman and European Culture and Society" (Duke University Press, 2005). In addition, two books by Prof. Talat Halman,

Director of the Center for Turkish Literature, have already appeared this year: "Sleeping in the Forest: Selected Stories and Poems of Sait Faik" and "Nightingales and Pleasure Gardens: Turkish Love Poems." Both were co-edited by Dr. Jayne Warner and published by Syracuse University Press. A third title by Prof. Halman and co-editor Dr. Warner, "A Brave New Quest: 100 Modern Turkish Poems," is scheduled to appear in November.

Orçun Gül Studio Launched

This story began last year, in an elevator. Rector Ali Doğramacı and a Radio Bilkent DJ happened to be on the elevator at the same time. The Rector described his vision for a new studio on campus, one that would bring a totally new dimension to Radio Bilkent.

The process of making this new studio a reality quickly got underway. First, a place near the Kıraç Restaurant was found, an empty room just waiting to be filled with music. Equipment featuring the most up-to-date audio technology was brought in.

And, finally, a dream came true last Wednesday, September 14, when Radio Bilkent's talented DJs made their first live broadcast from the new Orçun Gül Studio.

GÖREP's Work is Rewarded

Summer has come to an end, and Bilkenters have lots of news to share! This includes updates on volunteer projects that Bilkent students are involved in.

Last year we reported on the activities of GÖREP, the Education Project for the Visually Impaired (one of the Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri), which aims to assist visually impaired teenagers by helping them prepare for the university entrance examination. During this past summer, GÖREP volunteers learned that their efforts had produced very pleasing results. Six out of the seven high school students they coached last year did well enough on the exam to enter universities.

In addition, a ceremony held in June recognized GÖREP's work. Uygar Görme Engelliler Derneği, with the support of Çankaya Municipality, presented a plaque to GÖREP's coordinator Kerem Can Yılmaz (IE/III). Accepting the plaque on behalf of the group, he congratulated the visually impaired students and spoke about the project's importance.

For further information about GÖREP, please get in touch with Kerem Can Yılmaz by emailing him at kcyilmaz@ug.bilkent.edu.tr Aslıhan Yılmaz (IR/II)
