Seventh PASO Student
Film Fest on the Way

Every year, many university students in Turkey produce motion pictures in the hope of contributing to the development of film art. Unfortunately, many of these films, each of which is the end product of intense effort and creativity, do not receive the opportunity of a screening and so cannot reach an audience. In response to this situation, a group of students from the Department of Communication and Design decided to establish the Paso Student Film Festival.

The Seventh Paso Student Film Festival, organized by the Bilkent University Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, and the Communication Faculties from Gazi, Başkent, and Ankara Universities, invites university students to submit their creative films for showing. The idea behind the event is to screen student films in an environment free of conventional categories and competition.

During the Paso Student Film Festival, post-screening discussions and panels will accompany many of the films. While the discussions will enable the audience to exchange ideas with the filmmakers, the panels will address the broader issue of common problems faced by young filmmakers. Moreover, the Communication and Design Department received a grant of 12,000 Euros from the Turkish National Agency in the name of the EU to invite 30 German students to participate in PASO in a 10-day workshop.

If you want to submit your project, the deadline is March 2. To be eligible, you must be a student, and your film should be no longer than half an hour and produced after 2005. The Paso Film Festival will be held March 30 - April 10 at the German Cultural Center in Ankara. After the showing of the films, the audience will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion session about what they have seen. From the Student Council

Dear Friends,
As the newly elected student council, my fellow members and I believe that we can only achieve our goals by being responsive to you, the student body. The statement "make a difference" has been used many times by previous student councils. However, simply attending the student club meetings or attending and helping with regular events does not count as making a difference. We believe that Bilkent students deserve more.

First of all we would like to express our appreciation to all who supported us with their votes and we look forward to representing the student body. As the 2006-2007 Student Council, we are aware of our potential impact on campus life. For this reason, our priority is the student clubs and we are ready to help all of them, because we believe that a chain is only as powerful as its weakest link.

One of our duties is to build a bridge between the students and the university administration, so that problems can be solved effectively and to the satisfaction of all parties. Also, any other problem you bring to our attention will be considered with care and a solution will be sought.

In addition, our projects will be coordinated in harmony with the administrative units. Our action plan will be published monthly in the Bilkent News so you can easily follow our progress and check that we have kept our promises. Bilkent is a large and respected family and being a part of this family is a great honor for us.

We want to thank all of our friends who supported and trusted us. Finally, we wish you a productive and successful year.
