Distinguished Teachers Honored

The University is pleased to announce the recipients of the Distinguished Teachers of the Year Awards for 2010. Prof. Erol Arkun, Ebru Eren, Asst. Prof. Sinan Gezici, and Assoc. Prof. Refet Gürkaynak were chosen for demonstrating outstanding teaching abilities, and for contributing to students' academic and intellectual development. Bilkent News asked this year's “Distinguished Teachers” for their thoughts on receiving this award.

Erol ArkunProf. Erol Arkun / Computer Engineering
I indeed feel very happy to be among the faculty members who are honored with the Distinguished Teaching Awards in 2010. I am grateful to all my students, past and present, and to my colleagues who nominated me and supported me. I am also thankful to the Bilkent Teaching Awards Committee who had the challenging job of assessing and selecting from among the numerous candidates who are all worthy of this honor.

Ebru ErenEbru Eren / Business Information Management
During our school life, our parents tell us to choose "the profession we like..." At that time, we do not mind this advice. But in the long run, we understand the importance of choosing the right profession, as it becomes a crucial part of our happiness. We realize that a person can only be happy and productive while doing the work he/she loves. My philosophy in life is "to love, to generate and to share," which directly matches my profession of thirteen years. This gives me the opportunity to display all these ideas together, to live it and combine it with my interest in learning and my desire to share. It completes me and gives me an opportunity to express myself. From the moment, I learned that I had received this distinguished award, numerous faces passed through my mind... Smiling, bright faces... Those I was with in the same classroom, spending time to know and understand each other, my dear graduates and students... My colleagues whose support I have always had... My dearest family and friends that always shared my dreams, excitement and ideals... You all have brought me to this moment… Thank you!

Sinan GeziciAsst. Prof. Sinan Gezici / Electrical and Electronics Engineering
It is a great honor for me to receive this award. I am grateful to my students, friends and colleagues for their support. I would especially like to thank my students for their friendly attitudes and active participation during lectures, which provide additional motivation for me to improve my teaching skills. Also, I would like to mention that when I was an undergraduate student at Bilkent University, I was impressed by the teaching capabilities of my professors, their broad knowledge in their fields, and their dedication to teaching. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to them for being a true inspiration for me in my academic career.

Refet GürkaynakAssoc. Prof. Refet Gürkaynak / Economics
I am honored to receive this teaching award. Throughout my education, I was fortunate enough to have some amazing teachers who left lasting effects on me, both professionally and personally. I owe them a debt of gratitude not only for all that they taught me, but also for showing me how to be a good teacher. Following their example, I show my students the respect they deserve. I try to stimulate them intellectually by having interactive classes and asking for work that requires research and thinking. As a result, I have learned a lot from my students. I thank them for motivating me to teach.
