In Remembrance of Prof. Berkman

This Monday, December 23, was the anniversary of the loss last year of Prof. Ümit Berkman, founding chair of the Department of Management, longtime faculty member of the Faculty of Business Administration, former vice rector for administrative and financial affairs, and secretary general of the university for 16 years. This week, on Thursday, December 27, the seminar room (MA-330) in the Faculty of Business Administration will be named in his honor.

Throughout the year but especially upon this anniversary, we remember Prof. Berkman with deep sorrow and also with enduring affection. All of us, from his students to his fellow faculty members, from Bilkent administrative personnel to his many friends, have our own cherished memories.

We at Bilkent News recall him with special fondness as a member of our Editorial Board from 1995 to 2011, whose generous advice and wise counsel could always be depended upon.

Library Extends Opening Hours During Finals

Final examinations are almost upon us, and students need a quiet place to prepare. Starting this week, from December 24 until January 8, 2013, the three reading rooms in A-Block of Main Campus Library will remain open until 3 a.m. each day, except on December 31, when we will close early, and January 1, when we will be closed all day. There will be no reference or circulation services after 11:30 p.m., but Coffee Break will stay open to provide refreshments for those who need to work late in the Library. We hope these extra opening hours will help students when preparing for their finals.

As many library users will already know, last week student volunteers from the Literature Society organized a colorful and seasonal addition to the entrance of Main Campus Library: a Christmas tree made entirely from books! They have also set up a "wish board," where you can write and pin up your thoughts and expectations for 2013. Even if you are not planning to enter the Library, please come and admire the beautiful book tree and add your wishes to the board.
