The 2012 İhsan Doğramacı Memorial Lecture will take place on Monday, November 12, at the Bilkent Concert Hall, and will include presentations by two distinguished scientists working in related areas. The speakers will be Prof. Peter Walter of the University of California-San Fransisco and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Prof. Gökhan Hotamışlıgil of Harvard University. The program will start at 3:30 p.m. with a mini-concert. This will be followed by the lectures, and then a reception at 5:30 p.m. Prof. Walter, who will speak on "The Unfolded Protein Response in Health and Disease," discovered a signaling pathway ensuring homeostasis of an important intracellular metabolic hub, the endoplasmic reticulum. Prof. Hotamışlıgil, whose lecture is entitled "The Endoplasmic Reticulum and Metabolic Homeostasis," found that obesity-associated endoplasmic reticulum stress and the chronic inflammatory response contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. With these complementary discoveries, the two researchers have made important contributions to biomedical science.
