Bilkent’s International Yaşar Kemal Symposium

The Center for Turkish Literature is sponsoring an International Symposium on Yaşar Kemal on May 16-17 at the Mithat Çoruh Auditorium.
Yaşar Kemal, world-famous Turkish novelist and Nobel Prize nominee in literature, will be featured at this symposium, which is the most comprehensive ever for a living Turkish novelist. His books have been translated into more than thirty languages and he has been awarded numerous distinguished prizes in Turkey and Europe. Opening remarks will be delivered by Talat Halman, and Yaşar Kemal. Süha Oğuzertem will give the keynote address. Among the presenters at the symposium are such well-known critics and academics as Sam Baskett, İlhan Başgöz, Enis Batur, Adnan Binyazar, Clare Brandabur, Jean-Pierre DeLeage, Mustafa Durak, Konur Ertop, Altan Gökalp, Nedim Gürsel, Özdemir İnce, Alpay Kabacalı, Muharrem Kaya, Onur Bilge Kula, Mustafa Şerif Onaran, Belma Ötüş-Baskett, Saliha Paker, and Güven Turan, as well as several graduate students from the Department of Turkish Literature. The papers will be given in English, French, and Turkish.
At a special program starting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, selections from Yaşar Kemal's work will be read by the author himself and by Ayten Gökçer, Cünety Gökçer, Olcay Poyraz, Hidayet Daş and Rüştü Asyalı, Zülfü Livaneli, and Doğan Hızlan.
On Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. Yaşar Kemal will be given an honorary doctorate by Bilkent University and he will deliver an acceptance speech. After the ceremonies the renowned author will spend an hour or more conversing with the audience.

Graduation Ball Coming Up

The Graduation Ball will be held on Wednesday, June 5 at the Bilkent Hotel Sakarya Ballroom at 7 p.m., featuring a concert by the famous Turkish pop / jazz singer Işın Karaca. The ticket price is 55 million TL. per person until May 17, and will be sold for 60 million TL. from May 20 onwards. Tickets may be purchased from the Yearbook Committee Student representatives or from the Alumni Office in the Student Union Building.

MayFest Offering a Myriad of Fun and Entertainment

Just as in years past, MayFest is coming to campus to celebrate the end of the semester and welcome the summer holiday. During the 3 day-period, activities will be held for students on the grass field between the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts and the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences as well as on East Campus. Each day there will be a flower bazaar, an exhibition on the Love Project and Concerts, as well as night-time observations with telescopes. Physics Graduate Student Becomes MIT Scientist

Mehmet Bayındır, a graduate student in the Physics Department, will finish his Ph.D. studies at the end of May - at which time he will start working as a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After finishing his B.S. in 1994, Mehmet Bayındır continued his graduate studies at Bilkent University. His advisor Prof. Dr. Ekmel Özbay noted: “This proved to be a very wise decision for Mehmet, as he has published more than 25 Science Citation Index papers during his graduate studies.”
Mehmet Bayındır's research work focuses on photonic crystals. Photonic crystals are expected to be the building blocks of the next generation of optical networks, helping to speed up existing internet connections more than a thousand times.
