Advanced
Research Training School in Condensed Matter Physics
Four members of the Physics Department, T. Hakioglu, O. Gülseren, Ö.
Oktel and C. Bulutay, have collaborated to start a major year-round advanced research
training school in condensed matter physics. Condensed Matter is an important discipline
within physics; progress in this area has an impact across the spectrum or science and
technology. The Department of Physics concentrates its efforts in graduate education and
research in theoretical and experimental areas in this discipline.
This year the training school’s program consisted of three semesters, each including a
three-week-long 90-hour intensive teaching period. The courses included daily quizzes and
homeworks which were then evaluated to help select those participants invited to the next
semester. The first semester, taught from July 1-23 at the Feza Gürsey
Institute/İstanbul and fully supported by the Feza Gürsey Institute/TÜBİTAK, was
attended by 60 carefully selected participants at the Ph.D. and academic levels from 10
different physics departments across the nation. The second semester, also fully supported
by TÜBİTAK, was held from August 23-to September 10 at the Ankara University Ilgaz
mountain complex and attended by 25 invitees from among the first semester participants.
The third semester is projected to be a research semester for invitees from among the
second semester participants and is planned to take place sometime in early 2005 on the
Bilkent campus. It will involve guided research in theoretical and computational fields
according to current developments in these fields, giving participants increased
opportunities of involvement in interactive and professional group research.
The Founders hope that the school will become established on a permanent basis, helping to
promote direct research training in condensed matter physics.

Words
from a
Distinguished Teacher
Prof. Ömer Morgül of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, who
received the university's Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award at the end of the 2003-4
academic year, has written the following in acknowledgment of the honor:
"I am very much pleased, surprised and certainly honored by receiving this very
prestigious award. We are very fortunate to have an excellent group of students at Bilkent
University who have a strong desire to learn and excel in their fields. The stimulating
discussions and interactions with them certainly had a positive effect on my teaching.
This award will certainly motivate me to further improve my teaching and services to
Bilkent University as well as to consider the feedback I receive from the students more
seriously. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both my past and present
students and those who honored me with the Distinguished Teaching Award."
As Bilkent students and faculty members begin the 2004-2005 academic year, they can look
forward to many opportunities for interaction of the sort mentioned by Prof. Morgül.
