The Board of Trustees of Bilkent
University met on October 17, 2005. Present at the meeting were Chairman İhsan Doğramacı, Turgay

Symphony Orchestra Opens a New Season
The Bilkent Symphony Orchestra opened its
current season on Saturday, October 15. The program included the Beethoven Piano Concerto
No. 4 and Mahler's Symphony No. 7. The conductor was the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra’s
Music Director Emil Tabakov, and Hüseyin Sermet was the piano soloist.
At the next concert, on October 22, the guest artist will be the well-known flutist
Şefika Kutluer. The full program for the concert is printed below. Tickets are available
at the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts. You can also buy your ticket by credit card
by calling ext. 1775.

Doctors Discuss Avian Flu
A recent outbreak of influenza A (H5N1), also known as
avian influenza or "bird flu," has been reported in several countries, including
Turkey. Avian flu is a virus infection carried by birds. Over the past few years it has
caused small but increasing numbers of human deaths in East Asia. Bilkent News interviewed
Doctors Jale Erten and Ülker Türksoy of the Bilkent Health Centers and Professor Tayfun
Özçelik of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics about avian influenza. Prof.
Özçelik and Drs. Erten and Türksoy summarized the mainstream views of international

Tekin Ertan
Receives 2005 Nestlé Pro Gastronomia Foundation Award
Tekin Ertan, instructor and former Deputy Director
of the School of Applied Technology and Management, has been named as the recipient of the
Nestlé Pro Gastronomia Foundation Award for 2005.
The award is presented every year to "honour a professional who has demonstrated
excellence in training, education and development work in the hospitality industry."
This year's award will be presented during the closing ceremony of the EuroCHRIE 2005
Conference to be held in Paris, France, in late October. EuroCHRIE is the European
Federation of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education.
Alisbah Fellowship Awarded to MATH Students
Two students, Baris Evren Uğurcan (MATH/III) and Olcay Coşkun (Ph.D.)
received the "Orhan Alisbah Fellowship Award" on October 14, at the Department
of Mathematics awards ceremony.
The Orhan Alisbah Fellowship is conferred in memory of Prof. Orhan Alisbah (1910-1989),
one of the best-known mathematicians in Turkey. Orhan Alisbah's son, Prof. Bilsel Alisbah,
has presented fellowships to students in the Department of Mathematics at Bilkent annually
since 1998. This fellowship serves to preserve the memory of Prof. Alisbah, in particular
as a role model for young mathematicians.
Donations Needed
The Student Union's Community Services Project is running a campaign to
assist the students of Hikmet Uluğbay Primary School in Şabanözü village near Polatli.
The aim of this campaign is to provide the following basic items:
- Stationery - Books (primary school level)
- Clothes (in good condition) - Toys
(in good condition)

Sena Özel, Student Union Building, Room Z-03, before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, October 24.
