Creating Change with Awareness

"We have always spoken, but have seldom read" say volunteers of the club hoping to inspire more reading in Turkey. "We have always seen, known, made comments, but could never change."

On March 22, Bilkent Toplum Gönüllüleri Grubu (Community Volunteers Group) read in front of the Science Faculty Buildings with the slogan "we are aware to create awareness." The club's aim is to make people aware of the lack of a reading culture in Turkey and to change things by creating an awareness of the issue. The reading session began with the members of TOG wearing yellow aprons, and the number of people reading increased slowly as other Bilkent students joined in. Soft guitar music accompanied the readers.

Bilkent Toplum Gönüllüleri Grubu continues to engage in other volunteer activities with other TOG clubs and groups organized at 70 universities across Turkey. Members report that they believe the youth can be pioneers in society by showing their sensibility with regard to social problems. They believe they can convert their energy into social change by being active citizens. As such, club members are aiming to be a part of this progress and change by reading to create awareness.

Bilkent TOG is open to everyone who wants to participate in a friendly, respectful atmosphere. If you are interested in volunteering, detailed information is online at:

Guests also had a chance to meet and talk with the artists whose works were on display including, Nuri Abaç, Kadri Atabaş, Gülsüm Baydar, Faruk Erkal, Yalçın Oğuz, Mükremin Barut, Gür Dalkıran, Mükremin Mungan, Muammer Hacıbaloğlu, Mustafa Mete Tığlı, Salih Köksalan, Vedat Ağca, Ali Kemal Karahan, Aysun Coşar, Ayşe Ergül, Mehmet Ertan Yollu, Ertuğrul Özakdemir, Reha Benderlioğlu, Haldun Erdoğan, Fikret Ünsal, Ali Cinoğlu, Cahit Kalenderoğlu, Mehmet Sayım Karayel, Affan Yatman.

Attila Güllü, the coordinator of Library Art Gallery, emphasized the importance of the exhibition as it provides people with the opportunity to see how architects are able to reveal their artistic capacities in their paintings not just their building designs. In this sense, the artists' works in this exhibition express their way of disguising themselves within their art. The exhibition can be visited until April 22 between 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. everyday, except Sundays.
