Graduation Ceremonies to be Held on June 17
Graduation ceremonies for Bilkent University graduate and undergraduate
students will be held on Tuesday, June 17 at the Bilkent ODEON.
Ceremony and rehearsal times for each faculty and school will be announced soon. Please
make sure that you arrive at the commencement site at least an hour before the ceremony
begins.
Morning Ceremony:
Tuesday, June 17, 10:30 a.m.
Rehearsal: Monday, June 16 at 10 a.m.
Afternoon Ceremony:
Tuesday, June 17, 5 p.m.
Rehearsal: Monday, June 16 at 2 p.m.
Also, the Registrar's Office would like to remind students that they must pay off their
library, traffic and dormitory balances before graduation. Students who do not do so will
not receive their diploma at the ceremony.
Graduation
Ball Coming Up!
The 2008 Graduation Ball will be held on June 5 and
6 at the Bilkent Hotel's Sakarya Ballroom at 8 p.m., and will
feature a live concert by Turkish pop singer Altay.

Friday, June 6:
FADA, FE, FHL, SAL, VSCTOM, BUSEL
The ticket price is 120 YTL per person if you purchase tickets before May 26,
and 130 YTL from May 26 onwards.
Tickets will be available at the Alumni Center in the Student Council Building from

Spring Fest
Concerts
Spring Fest 2008 will take place from Thursday,
May 8 to Saturday, May 10, with evening concerts arranged at the
ODEON for May 8 and 9 by the Spring Fest Organization
Committee. Note that the concerts are only for Bilkent University students, personnel and
alumni.
Please note that student ID cards must be presented when purchasing tickets. Each student
may only purchase one ticket and it is not possible to buy a group of tickets. Please
remember that at the entrance to the concert each student will need to show their student
ID with their ticket, otherwise they will not be permitted to attend the concert.
Seats will be allocated by the ticket officer in the order that they are sold, thus
students who purchase their tickets earlier will have seats closer to the front.
Ticket sale points and dates:
Ticket sales will begin on Wednesday, April 30, between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the
following places:
- East Campus-Catering Center
- East Campus-Coffee Break
- Middle Campus- FMPA Building
- The entrance of FEASS
- The entrance of Building B
- The entrance of Kıraç and Speed
- Marmara Restaurant
Any remaining tickets will be sold on May 8 and 9 from 12 noon at the Spring Fest Area.

Physics MS Student Receives SPIE Scholarship
Tuncay Özel, a first year MS student in the Department of Physics at
Bilkent, has been announced as one of the recipients of the SPIE scholarship for 2008.
SPIE (The International Society for Optical Engineering) serves as the world's largest
international society in the fields of optics and photonics, with 17,000 individual
members worldwide. The SPIE Scholarships Program supports students from around the globe
who have outstanding potential for long-range contribution to the fields of optics and
photonics.
Özel continues his studies under the supervision of Dr. Hilmi Volkan Demir of the Physics
Department and Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department. Özel is currently
working on the development of innovative GaN-based quantum nanodevices in the emerging
fields of optoelectronics and nanophotonics. To date, Özel has co-authored 7 SCI journal
papers in the Demir’s Devices and Sensors Research Group as part of his MS studies.

PASO Student Film and Digital Media Festival: One on One with Ezel Akay
The 8th PASO Student Film and Digital Media Festival took
place on April 24 to 27 at the Bilkent University Communication and Design Department and
the Goethe Institute. This year, 86 films were screened from various countries: Argentina,
Georgia, Germany and Holland, as well as Turkey.
A number of workshops were held for students. Presenters included Emanuel Jannasch
(production designer and art director); Rosa Menkman; Minke Kampman and Mariska de Groot
(Viaduktape), Tjerk Timan (Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam Polytechnic); Seth
Feldman (scholar, radio programmer and documentary director); Franziska von Malsen
(director); Burhan Gün (lawyer); Jerry Szprot (director); Gürsel Korat (author) and Ezel
Akay (director and producer). Bilkent News had an opportunity to speak
