Recent Administrative Changes
Some years ago, when I first heard that Bilkent's Department
of Communication and Design was putting out a newspaper called "Bayat Haber"
(Stale News), I thought that it was a cute oxymoron. It seemed to me that if it is stale,
it can't be news. Now I realize that some items, even if not recent news, still ought to
be published. Since Bilkent News is not printed during the summer, one of
the appointments I will announce here actually goes back a few months.
Since 2005, Professor Turgut Tan, the Founding Dean of our Faculty of Law, had been
quietly expressing his interest in leaving administration in order to devote more time to
his teaching and publications. This summer his wishes were realized. He turned over the
administration of the Law faculty to Professor Osman Gürzumar. We are grateful to
Professor Tan for having served as a Dean, in the most formative years of his faculty.
During these years, Professor Gürzumar had served as the Associate Dean. He will now take
the helm of the Office of the Dean, and put his considerable energy, experience and talent
to bring his Faculty to new heights in the international arena.
A more recent appointment is that of Professor Arif Çağlar, as Director of Bilkent's
Graduate School of Education in Erzurum (GSEE). The new high school we established in
Erzurum is designed to operate as a laboratory school of GSEE. Many of the teachers of the
Erzurum high school are preparing to start part-time graduate studies at our Graduate
School of Education in Bilkent-Ankara. After GSEE completes its professorial appointments,
it will eventually take over the Erzurum students. (continues)
New FBA EMBA Program For İzmir!
This month, the Bilkent University Faculty of Business
Administration is launching a brand new Executive MBA Program in İzmir. The 24-month
program, which will be in Turkish, begins in January 2008. The goal is to develop world
class executives who can perform in today's business world. Participants will get the

undergraduate and graduate business administration programs. The program is being set up
in İzmir due to the city’s tremendous commercial and industrial value to the region and

The Importance of
Interpretation and Translation Highlighted
The Conference Interpreting Education Programs: Principals in Education Seminar, organized
by the School of Applied Languages Translation and Interpretation Department, was held
October 5 at Bilkent University. The one-day gathering began at 9 a.m. with a performance
by the Bilkent Quartet, and wrapped up at 3:30 p.m. with a reception. There were three
sessions overall, and participation was very high.
Rector Prof. Ali Doğramacı delivered the opening speech, emphasizing the importance of
translation and interpretation. Attendees included many prestigious speakers and
academics, including representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament,
the Professional Conference Interpreters Worldwide (AIIC) and United Conference
Interpreters Organization (BKTD). Olga Cosmidou from the European Parliament, and Wolter
Witteveen and Persefoni Pouliou from the European Council all remarked on how vital this
field is for negotiations between Turkey and the EU.
The seminar was held in three languages (English, French, and Turkish), while volunteer
professional conference interpreters provided simultaneous interpretation. This was a
perfect opportunity for attendees from a variety of universities to experience first hand
an interpreted event, and to learn about the status of conference interpreting in Turkey
and the EU.
Prodigy Impresses
the World's Best!
Violin prodigy Elvin Hoxha
Ganiyev was born in 1997 in Ankara. He grew up in a musical family, which included his
grandfather- Prof. Server Ganiyev of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts. Elvin's
talents were discovered when he was only two years old. He began training at the Bilkent
University Music Preparatory Elementary School's Violin Department at age six. This year,
he was one of only five gifted children in the world to attend the International Violin
Festival, held in Kazakhstan between September 13-17, where he represented Turkey.
He was invited to the festival for concerts and master classes, where he met world famous
violin instructor, Zahari Bron. Elvin's stage presence and artistic performance surprised
Bron, and he sees a huge potential that could one day lead to world wide fame. The young
prodigy has been attracting major attention, even being invited to play along side great
violinists such as Viktor Pikayzen.
Elvin still studies at Bilkent, and has represented the university in a most impressive
way! If you wish to find out more on this talented young man, you can visit his website
and read about his accomplishments at www.elvinhoxhaganiyev.com
