Bilkent News Picture Challenge
I Know Where You've Been This Week
Hello everyone! First, let me remind you how the picture challenge works. Every week I walk around in our campus and take a picture of something. We put it on BN, ask what this is, and if you can make a right guess you get a chance to win a coffee from Coffee Break or a lunch from Le Piment Rouge. Easy money! Sounds so, right? I bet the challenge will not be that easy for many Billkenters. Hundreds of people go in and out of the campus everyday, but many, especially those who have a car, do not see much of it. Even if you have that luck to be a mandatory walker, you may not be aware of the history that the trees over here and the buildings over there hide. Thanks to me, I am here to serve you by bringing out the stories of every stone located in our campus!
Last week I chose to put a picture of the Atatürk statue at the entrance of main campus in BN to honor the memory of our beloved leader's death 72 years ago. Interestingly, I found out that the frame between Atatürk and the two students is meant to be a beam of light. The students symbolize the principles and the revolutions of Atatürk that carry Turkey to modernity. Mehmet Beşirbellioğlu from the Environmental Planning and Protection Unit says: "The monument came here as five or six pieces. One day there was nothing at the entrance and the other day, that gorgeous work of Professor Hüseyin Gezer was standing in the middle of newly shaped grass field. About 30 people worked late that night to get the monument ready for 77th anniversary celebration of Turkish Republic, which was next morning."
As you see, from now on I will try to get into more of the personal details of the history of our school. I do not know if there is really so much to discover about it but I suppose, after spending 4 long years of my life in here, it deserves a shot.
So, enjoy it! And walk around in the campus more!
Prizes will be:
The first two correct answers win coffee from Coffee Break.
The 15th correct answer wins lunch for one from Le Piment Rouge.
