Faculty Members Awarded Marie Curie Career Integration Grants

Two Bilkent faculty members have received 2013 European Commission Marie Curie Career Integration Grants (CIGs). CIGs are given to recent doctoral graduates and experienced researchers returning to the European Union and associated states to initiate research groups and laboratories after a period of work outside the European Research Area. The grant recipients are Asst. Prof. Buğra Gedik of the Department of Computer Engineering and Asst. Prof. Mehmet Z. Baykara of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and UNAM. Dr. Gedik joined the Bilkent University faculty in 2012. Prior to that, he was a research staff member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in the US. He obtained a BSc in computer science from Bilkent University in 2001 and a PhD in computer science from Georgia Institute of Technology in the US in 2006. Dr. Gedik's research addresses scalability and performance issues in data-intensive distributed systems.

Dr. Baykara, who also joined the Bilkent faculty in 2012, received his BS in mechanical engineering from Boğaziçi University in 2006 and his PhD from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Yale University in 2012. Dr. Baykara's research will be directed toward uncovering the influence of interface structure on friction at the nanoscale, using the sophisticated research equipment available at UNAM.
