Eminent Law Scholar to Visit Bilkent


Prof. Menachem Mautner, distinguished scholar of law and the former dean of law at Tel Aviv University, will give a talk on October 1 (see the Calendar of Events on page 8). He is an invited guest of the Department of Philosophy.


Prof. Mautner is the Danielle Rubinstein Professor of Comparative Civil Law and Jurisprudence at Tel Aviv University. He received his LL.B. and LL.M. from the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law. He obtained another LL.M. and a J.S.D. from Yale Law School, where he was a Fulbright grantee. He has had visiting appointments at Michigan Law School, NYU Law School, Columbia Law School and Harvard Law School. Prof. Mautner's most recent book, "Law and the Culture of Israel," appeared in 2011 (Oxford University Press). He has authored or edited nearly a dozen books and published over 70 articles and chapters in the areas of contract law, law and culture, and multiculturalism. An article he wrote for Michigan Law Review in 1991 substantially influenced case law and scholarship in both Israel and the United States in the area of conflicts over rights in assets. Prof. Mautner was a member of the Committee on the Preparation of Israel's New Civil Code.
