Distinguished Teachers Honored

The university is pleased to announce the recipients of the Distinguished Teachers of the Year Award for 2003. Each of the recipients were chosen by students for demonstrating outstanding teaching abilities, and for contributing to the academic and intellectual development of the students.

Jamel Ben Muhamed Chafra (THM) “I would like first, to thank my wife Demet for her extreme help and patience that allowed me eventually to get this award. Equally, I would like to dedicate this valuable nomination to my 2-year old lovely daughter Fatma, and to all the Tourism and Hotel Management School members. Last but not least, I would like to thank my students for their extreme trust and belief! I consider this an opportunity to say that after, being nominated, my responsibility towards the Bilkent community has grown which means that I have to work harder and harder not to disappoint those who have supported me!”

Assoc. Prof. Azer Kerimov (MATH) “I am most honored to have received the Distinguished Teachers Award for this year. I would like to say that this is the most meaningful event in my pedagogical career. I believe this recognition will motivate me considerably in my teaching and in my service to Bilkent University. I want to express my gratitude to all those who nominated me as well as to those who honored me by giving me this prestigious award.”

Asst. Prof. Uygar H. Tazebay (MBG) “I am both surprised and very honored. I would like to dedicate this award to the founders of Bilkent University and to the administrators of our Faculty, who made it possible to have a Faculty of Sciences with classrooms filled with students of impeccable learning qualities; with exceptional learners having a strong desire for knowledge. It is impossible not to see with emotion that the students we are teaching today in these classrooms will soon be the leaders of internationally recognized scientific groups worldwide, and the establishers of a tradition of hard work, rigor and creativity in experimental sciences in the country.”

Yakup Aykut Pekcan (THM) “I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Distinguished Teachers of the Year Award for 2003. During my thirty five years of professional and academic work, this award is the most prestigious and meaningful for me. In my School, whether I'm in the classroom or in my office, I always feel myself as the manager of an excellent organization where everybody is trying to add something to it, without limiting themselves with the time, and share the privileges that comes out as a result of efforts spent to reach the objectives. There, the team leader is participative, an active listener, problem handler, creative, and willing to share the knowledge with all the people in his team. I am proud of being a member of such a team. My teammates are the future of my country and it makes me happy to mention that the future is in the right hands. I love them all and wish them success in their future life.”
