ELIT/AMER to Sponsor Lit Conference
The Departments of English Language and Literature (ELIT) and American Culture and Literature (AMER) are pleased to announce their first joint undergraduate conference. The topic of the conference is "Representing the Other" in Anglo-American Literature, and it will be held on April 28 to 29 in C-Block Auditorium. It will be free and open to public.
The conference aims to create an atmosphere where literature undergraduates from universities all around Turkey and abroad can exchange views, share ideas, and socialize among themselves. Students from both ELIT and AMER departments are co-organizing the event with help of faculty members.
The conference will focus on the representation of "the other" in literary studies, but its scope is meant to be broader. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
· Experiences of Otherness
· Embracing or Abjecting "the Other"
· Psychology of "the Other"
· Racial Otherness
· Gender Politics
· Homosexuality and Othering
· Selfhood/ Identity/ Madness
· Woman as "the Other"
· Othering in Motherhood
· Culture and Othering
By the way, any student from any discipline is welcome to present a paper at the conference. We encourage students to send a 250-word statement of purpose to the committee, which is composed of ELIT and AMER students, by January 28, 2011. The committee will review the statements on the basis of academic value and originality and notifications of acceptance will be sent by February 15.
