Bilkent Students Win Turkey's First EU Young Translators Competition

On December 12, 2010, the Secretariat General for EU Affairs, (SGEUA) brought 82 students from 19 universities in Turkey to SGEUA headquarters at Bilkent to compete in a two-hour written translation contest from English, French, or German to Turkish. After the SGEUA Translation Evaluation Commission assessed the translations for source and target text mastery, correct EU terminology usage, and grammar, they awarded Anıl Dursun (TRIN/IV) first place in the French to Turkish translation category and Nihal Zemheri (TRIN/IV) second place for her translation from English to Turkish.

On January 18, 2011, Minister for EU Affairs and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bağış presented plaques to the the first three students in each language category at the SGEUA headquarters in Ankara. Moreover, from January 25 to January 28, these top nine students traveled to Brussels to visit EU translation offices. In addition, three students will do internships at Sabah newspaper.

Held for the first time in 2010, the Young Translators Competition aims to increase students' awareness about Turkey's EU candidacy process and to fill the gap of translators that will be needed during EU harmonization and the translation of the Acquis Communautaire.
