Board of Trustees Meets

The Bilkent University Board of Trustees met on January 28, 2011. Present at the meeting were Board Chairman Ali Doğramacı, Gülsev Kale, Ahmet Nalbur, Ersin Özince, Şencan Özme, Muhsin Saraçlar, Lütfü Sel, Ergün Toğrol, Ergül Tunçbilek, Boğaç Üner, and Rector Abdullah Atalar.

At the meeting, the Board of Trustees discussed a number of proposals that had been put forth by the University Senate.

Rector Abdullah Atalar gave a topical presentation, reviewed the general situation of the university, the number of undergraduate, graduate, and international students and academic staff for the past 5 years, research publications, new courses for the 2010-2011 academic year, such as GE250, GE590, and GE690, programs such as “Sports as a Way of Life,” Moodle workshops, the teaching center and the student registration system.

Columbia University Dean Visits Bilkent


Bilkent University had the pleasure of hosting distinguished guests from Columbia University on January 28. Dean Feniosky Peña-Mora of Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science and Associate Director Ryan Carmichael visited Bilkent as part of their Europe and Middle East tour. Their itinerary started in BLIS, where they had a chance to meet aspiring future Columbia students. After visiting Rector Abdullah Atalar and President Ali Doğramacı, the guests were guided by Dean of Engineering Levent Onural and Assistant Dean Mustafa Pınar to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Building for a short meeting and a tour.

Bilkent Student’s First Prize Poster Jazzes Up İzmir

Meltem Şahin, 3rd year student from the Department of Graphic Design, has been awarded first prize in the 9th Jazz Poster Competition organized by İzmir Foundation for Culture, Arts, and Education (İKSEV). Five of Şahin's posters have been recognized by İKSEV for creative excellence.

Bilkent Students Win Turkey's First EU Young Translators Competition

On December 12, 2010, the Secretariat General for EU Affairs, (SGEUA) brought 82 students from 19 universities in Turkey to SGEUA headquarters at Bilkent to compete in a two-hour written translation contest from English, French, or German to Turkish. After the SGEUA Translation Evaluation Commission assessed the translations for source and target text mastery, correct EU terminology usage, and grammar, they awarded Anıl Dursun (TRIN/IV) first place in the French to Turkish translation category and Nihal Zemheri (TRIN/IV) second place for her translation from English to Turkish.

Prof. İnalcık Recognized by King Faisal Foundation Prize


Professor Halil İnalcık, renowned historian and founder of Bilkent University's Department of History, has been chosen by the selection committee of the King Faisal International Prize as a co-winner of the King Faisal International Prize in Islamic Studies in 2011.

Prof. İnalcık is awarded the prize particularly for his seminal book: An Economic and Social History of the Ottoman Empire: 1300-1600, Part I. İnalcık's award-winning book represents five decades of research and is credited as establishing a new approach to Ottoman history.
